A New Addition to the Family

I mentioned a couple of posts back that I had sold my twelve year old son's mountain bike to buy him something he could do some touring on. Yesterday morning I saw an ad on Craigslist about a Raleigh Super Course for sale. This morning I spoke to Fred, the guy who posted the ad. Me and my son drove out to south Dallas to meet with Fred and take a look at the bike. The Raleigh was in great condition but was just a little too small. We ended up buying what I believe is a 1990 Trek 420. This should do just fine.

Fred has a nice little operation selling vintage bikes from his storage unit. He is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and really loves these old bikes. Fred told me that alot of his business comes from young people looking for bikes to convert to fixies. He's going to be at the upcoming bike swap in Deep Ellum at 3301 Elm St. Dallas, Texas, Saturday Januuary 31st starting at 7 AM till around 2:30-3 PM. If you're looking for a vintage bike or parts, or if you need some information on the bike swap you should give him a call at (214) 728-1365.

This is the Super Course I was thinking of buying.

Small framed Trek 560

I like this Puch mixte. This is one of several mixtes he has for sale.

This is a very nice small framed Gitane with some really interesting components.

Ofmega derailleur. These used to come in various colors.

Ofmega crankset

Fred told me that he couldn't find any information on this F. Delcroix frame.

This is what I ended up buying for my son.

Sakae Blaze triple crankset

Suntour Blaze derailleur

Eyelets for a rear rack

The headbadge is missing

The hoods need to be replaced.

  1. Good score on the Trek. IIRC anything in the X20 format is a relaxed geometry and good for touring.

Quite the collection that Fred has there, wish I was a bit closer.

  2. Congrats on the buy! I love Craigslist for the bargains to be found. I got an old Schwinn for $10 that I'm converting to a fixie.

  3. 2whls3spds-I figured that with the eyelets and triple chainring the Trek would be more than adequate for the load my son would be carrying.

Doohickie-Do you have everything you need to do the conversion or are you gathering parts?

    Im liking all the pictures.
So I assume that 420 is a steel frame? smooth! looks pretty cool, more to wait for new improvement-pictures. Your son must be so excited! :)

  6. Meligrosa-It's steel and my son is really excited. I hoping we can get out for our first road ride together this weekend.

Christopher-I'm going to try to make the Oak Cliff ride on the 1st. I'd like to go to the swap meet but I don't get paid till the next day.
