The Rare Mid-Week Ride

I actually had time for a quick ride during the week, a rare occurrence lately. Even rarer was the fact that my elder son wanted to ride with me. He actually had the day off and had no prior plans. It was hotter than you know what but we had a great time riding fast, chasing down lycra-clad roadies and just generally acting stupid. Unfortunately I didn't drink enough. I didn't really notice anything wrong until time for bed. I developed a terrible headache and was actually shivering under the covers. You would think I'd know better.

We rode through Trinity Park and passed by the feral cat colony. I've seen several raccoons out in the open eating cat food. The cats have obviously learned not to mess with the raccoons.

I found this 700c wheelset for sale on Craigslist for a price that was too good to pass up. These are the CL ad photos by the way. It turns out that the guy selling the wheels was the same guy that sold me the Lotus. He stopped by my blog and was surprised to see that I was able to fit 38mm tires on that old bike. The hubs look like the Chorus hubs on my other wheelset. The rims are Mavic Module 3's with the old red Mavic label. I need to do some research to see if I can mount a set of 40mm tires on 22mm rims.

The Campy skewers are still there.

These rims are destined for my Takara touring bike. I'll be attempting to replace the original cantilever brakes with a modern set with more height adjustment to allow the mounting of 700c wheels on a bike designed for 27" wheels.

  1. Hey Myles,
Great observation: "...was hotter than you know what but we had a great time riding fast, chasing down lycra-clad roadies and just generally acting stupid". There are always those on Campion Trail. I don't like their behavior one bit.

Glad you got out and rode with your son though! That time is invaluable.

    Peace :)

  2. Mid-week ride with your son, chasing down roadies, and new wheel set. That's a pretty good week. I need to give you a commission to find me a good go-fast project bike. You are the king of quality bargains.

  3. Be safe out there in the heat! I have personally found adding Chia seeds to water helps with hydration (a natural alternative to electrolytic drinks).

    Peace :)

  4. You ever do the ride east from River Crest Country Club on W 7th Street? It's a pretty awesome ride; from the western end of W 7th to University is a long downhill that makes the climb up worth it.

  5. Chandra-Other than the infamous Chia Pet I didn't know anything about Chia seeds. I read a little on the subject and thought it sounded interesting. I might give the Chia seeds a try.

Pondero-I'm way ahead of you on the bike thing. I asked J.R. (the guy I bought the wheels from) to let me know if he comes across a good quality road bike in your size.

Doohickie-I've only been out that way once on a ride with the Night Riders. Riding down that hill in the dark was scary (if we're talking about the same hill).

  6. When I built up a 69er, a few years back, to experiment with the whole 29er tire size, I mounted a 2.3" (58c) tire on an old TREK Matrix 22mm rim and rode a bunch of offroad miles on Colorado trails with no problem. I don't think 40s will give you any problems. But, as always, ymmv.
