Univega Mixte-A Work in Progress

I've had my wife's Univega Sportour mixte frame hanging in the garage for over a year now. I was going to have the frame powder coated but I've been able to clean the finish to the point that it looks acceptable. I really want to have this bike finished before the weather starts warming up.

I picked up a cartridge bottom bracket yesterday and installed it along with a few other parts. I'm still lacking a riser stem, upright bars, a good saddle, pedals, and assorted small items.

Since I bought the frame I've aquired a spare derailleur and a Shimano 600 crankset.

I hope to work on it some more tomorrow.

  1. I've been wondering about the status of that project. Nice to see it coming together.

  2. When set up, will this be friction shifting?

  5. The paint on that looks fantastic - no need to powdercoat.

Make sure that when you put that bottom bracket in that you grease the threads. Otherwise it'll squeak.

Mixte's are fantastic, my wife loves hers. Are you putting drop bars on, or cruiser bars?

  6. Friends, I'm really sorry for the late responses. Please excuse my poor manners.

Pondero-I can usually focus on only one project at a time. I'm easily distracted. I want to get this done so me and my wife can finally ride together.

Steve A-It will be friction. I may mount the shifters on the stem like I did with my Takara or go with thumb shifters. I don't want my wife to have to reach that far down to shift.

Doohickie-Absolutely! I'll send you some before and after photos.

meligrosa-My wife has plans for it. She's got her eyes on some cool accessories.

Justin-The paint looks better in the photos than it does in person, but it's an old bike and scratches are to be expected.

I bought a set of Wald Northroad bars for $12 and mated them to a generic riser stem. My wife has neck issues and needs to sit upright. I think these bars should work for her.

  10. fridaycyclotouriste-Fix it up, and be sure to send photos of the finished product to Doohickie's Mixte Gallery.

That photo was from our Ramble this past December. It was nice to ride somewhere other than the city for a change.

Jon-Thanks. I think it's a nice looking crankset. I should probably polish the scratches out of it. You've actually got a connection to a couple of my bikes. I'm currently using the brake levers you sent me on the folding bike, and the old 600 derailleur on the mixte.

Chandra-It's a surprising good quality Japanese steel frame from the early 80's. These old Univega frames are well liked.

I like the photo as well. It was a great ride.
