Afternoon ride

I managed an after-work ride the other day but I didn't have the time to post the photos.

After many days of severe thunderstorms the skies cleared and the wind died down making for perfect riding conditions. I wasn't going for a long ride, actually it was pretty short, but I mixed in some running. I'd occasionally hop off the bike, put one hand on the saddle and run while guiding the bike with the one hand. This is something that I saw an incredibly fit old man doing many years ago on the trail. When I can't run anymore I just hop back on the bike. The only downside is that I get continually asked if I'm having bike trouble.

This new structure along the trail is close to completion.

I initially thought it would be an office building until I saw the water fountain and cooling station/ outdoor shower.

The flowers appreciated the previous days rain. I was looking at this flower and messing with the camera when a cute little ladybug came in for a landing (I've seen green ones before). I didn't have my glasses on at the time. When I downloaded the photo my wife pointed out that it wasn't a ladybug. It's probably some foreign invasive species taking a breather before heading off to destroy somebody's garden. Either way, I'm dabbling in nature photography.

  1. Outdoor cooling station along the trail - what a great idea! With hot weather fast approaching, it'll get used a lot.

The bug is actually a spotted cucumber beetle. In it's larval form, it's known as the southern corn rootworm. In it's adult stage - like the one you've captured in your photo, it's a pest to squash, watermelons, and cucumbers. It actually carries along with it bacteria that infect the plant when it feeds, causing a quick death to the plant (bacteria wilt). My wife and I used to raise and sell melons and cucumbers at the local farmer's markets, so we got to know those creatures quite well. They are attractive, though.

  2. I knew it!!! I also knew that if anybody could identify that bug it would be Big Oak. Well done.

  4. Would it be possible to take a dip in the river in front of the cooling station, and then shower off?

  5. Funny, just as I was reading your blog, you commented on mine. How's that for timing?

Cool shots -- the ladybug-looking guy is neat-looking. Too bad it's a pest. The photo turned out well. The outdoor cooling station is brilliant!

  6. John Romeo Alpha-I have rarely seen anybody swim in the Trinity river. To be honest the water here just doesn't look too inviting. Besides, there are some big ugly alligator gar in there. I don't think they'd hurt you but I'd freak out if I came face to face with one.
